County Commission Chair Ken Bryan has assured the city on several occasions that the county can no longer afford to maintain the pool, closed for health reasons shortly after the new Solomon Calhoun Center opened two years ago.
Although no contractors responded to a request for proposals from the County earlier this year, County Administration says they arrived at the $400,000 as “a fair price” for the repair work needed to restore the pool facility to a condition where it would pass Health Department inspections and could remain open through the swimming season.
It is all but certain that the City will accept the County offer. A Flagler College research class is in the midst of surveying residents on what should be done with the Galimore Center and pool. A questionnaire is going out with this month’s water bills.
Once the County check is “in hand” the City will announce how it intends to spend the money, if approved.
If you are planning to attend — the regular St. Augustine City Commission meeting will begin at 5:00 p.m. today and will be held in the Alcazar Room; on the first floor of City Hall, located at 75 King Street in St. Augustine. It will be broadcast live on Comcast Government TV (Cable Channel 3) and is streamed over the Internet.
