P. J. Mistry, president of the Rotaract club, reported to Historic City News that her organization would be supporting the St. Augustine Humane Society holiday drive to replenish the local Pet Food Bank.
Rotaract is a service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. The clubs are either community or university based and are sponsored by a local Rotary club. Mistry is a member in the club based at Flagler College.
Collection bins have been stationed at the Winn Dixie located at 3905 A1A South and the Food Lion located at US-1 South and Lewis Point Road.
Each week, volunteers with the Rotaract group will gather the pet food donations.
Last year, the St. Augustine Humane Society collected 800 lbs. of pet food during the holidays from collection points set up at a variety of locations.
“We understand it’s a busy time of the year,” Mistry said. “We’re working diligently to maintain the bins and collect the generous donations.”
The Pet Food Bank, managed by the non-profit St. Augustine Humane Society, assists pet owners in financial need; supplying food and other necessities for up to six months. Operations Director Carolyn Smith said the goal of the Pet Food Bank is to keep pets in loving homes and to prevent euthanasia should the pet have to be surrendered.
