CARL SHANK

Be safe and legal with New Years fireworks

Posted on 12/30/201112/31/2011 By Historic City News

CARL SHANKFire Rescue Chief Carl Shank told Historic City News reporters in St Augustine that he wishes all St Johns County residents a safe and Happy New Year — although he issued a word of caution to those who are considering fireworks as part of their New Year’s Eve celebrations.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue officials suggest that residents refrain from the use of fireworks during the holiday in order to prevent accidental injuries and wildfires in our community.

Please remember that in the State of Florida, it is illegal to use any fireworks that either go “boom” or that leave the ground, Shank cautioned. “Don’t let the use of illegal fireworks ruin your celebration.”

As a safe and legal alternative, officials recommend that residents attend one of several public fireworks displays in the area instead of private fireworks demonstrations.

Shank said that public fireworks displays are put on by licensed professional vendors that are permitted on a case-by-case basis. The local fire marshal assures the public that the fireworks discharged during those programs are being used in a controlled and safe environment.
