Spanish Bakery site of Royal Tea

Historic City News received word from Vanessa Baker that yesterday’s Royal Tea “went very well with a great turn-out” at The Spanish Bakery located on St. George Street in the heart of the Spanish Quarter.

St. Augustine’s Royal Family members, and their entourage, are 17th century re-enactors who portray the ruling family in Spain in 1672; the same year that construction began on Castillo de San Marcos National Monument.

The Royal Family members are goodwill ambassadors for the City that have kept alive a long-established tradition during Easter Festival activities.

As the 53rd St. Augustine Easter Festival drew to a close, Catherine T. Baker served as emcee for the “Royal Tea” event; marking the conclusion of Easter celebratory appearances by the trio.

“This year’s Royal Family, portrayed by Suzanne Hazen as Queen Mariana; Jaime Blevins as Princess Margarita Maria; and James Solana III as the boy King Carlos, on behalf of the St. Augustine Easter Festival, would like to thank everyone who supported them during the 2011 Easter Celebration,” Baker told Historic City News.

Under the watchful eye of the Royals, nestled under the shade of a beautiful red cedar tree, both locals and tourist alike enjoyed the Sally Walton dancers as they performed a wide variety of traditional Spanish dances.

Another St. Augustine tradition was continued when Diego Roberto Bermudez and John Bennett Lloyd staged an exciting sword fight demonstration to the delight of all who attended the event.

Guests were served “Picadilla” and delicious cookies prepared by Gene Adlesperger of the Spanish Bakery.

As they continue their roles for the remainder of their term, the Royal family and entourage will travel to numerous out-of-town events — making appearances in period dress and promoting St. Augustine’s heritage during the period of discovery.
