Star Wars Day – May the Fourth

Historic City News marks today, May 4, 2011; the day commonly accepted, although unofficially, as “Star Wars Day”.

The naming of “May the fourth” is the result of a common pun on a phrase used by Obi-Wan Kenobi; a fictional character in the George Lucas created Star Wars universe, whose parting words of encouragement were often, “may the force be with you”.

The holiday, celebrated by fans of the Star Wars movie series, is also known as “Luke Skywalker Day” in honor of the film’s main protagonist. It is alternately celebrated on May 25th — the official release date of the first Star Wars movie in 1977.
