Community Affairs Officer Barbara Stevens reported to Historic City News that the officers of the St. Augustine Police Department were dispatched yesterday morning to St. Johns Community Campus; a charter high school that offers special education and alternative programs.
When officers arrived on the campus at 62 Cuna Street, they discovered three staff members who quelled the disturbance and were holding 19 year-old Crystal Leann Gray. According to Stevens, the responding officers reported that “Gray had blood around the mouth”.
Staff members told police that Gray attends classes there under court order and yesterday morning before 10:00 a.m., she attempted to “walk off campus”. When an attempt was made to keep her from leaving campus, “she started throwing rocks at them, hitting one in the head.”
A teacher’s aid was injured when he attempted to restrain Gray; police say the male employee was bitten by Gray on both of his hands.
Gray was taken into police custody and booked in the St. Johns County Detention Facility; where she is being held in lieu of $25,000.00 bond. Gray, who resides at 886 Ervin Street in Saint Augustine, has been charged with third degree felony battery.
Stevens told Historic City News that while she was being transported to jail, Gray stated that she knows it is wrong to bite or hit anyone.
