First America Foundation Executive Director Jamie Alvarez told Historic City News today that they will launch a special program for sixth-to-eighth grade St. Augustine students who want to get involved in the city’s 450th commemoration.
Selected students will participate as “Youth Ambassadors” in lectures, programs and field trips accompanied by foundation staff, board members, local organizations and other St. Johns County leaders.
As representatives from their schools and community, students can gain a deeper understanding for the historical significance of St. Augustine while gaining leadership skills in this four-year project, serving until they graduate from high school in 2015.
Students may apply beginning tomorrow on the First America Foundation website at myfirstamerica.org. The program is limited to 25 students, willing to commit to the program from its beginning in June 2011 through October 2015. The deadline for applying is Tuesday, April 26th.
Students will meet from 6:30 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. on the first Monday of each month in the First America Foundation offices at 1 News Place beginning June 6, 2011.
Volunteer Committee Chairman Nancy Birchall will be coordinating the Youth Ambassador program.
