Lance Thate informed local Historic City News reporters that a group of re-enactors took to the streets of downtown St. Augustine to celebrate Independence Day by circulating copies of the United States Constitution.
The entourage included several members of the “Town Crier Committee” of the St. Augustine Tea Party; a group that dresses in period costume and freely distributes the pamphlets to the public a couple of times each month.
The committee members set out about 3:00 p.m. on Monday, and carried Gadsden flags; which Thate says attracts lots of attention and requires frequent stops for history lessons on the flag. “One little girl approached a member of the group to ask if he was a pirate,” Thate told Historic City News. “The answer was no, I’m Samuel Adams.”
Thate said the girl and her family seemed to enjoy the lesson.
Rest and food were taken at the Floridian Restaurant and the Town Criers stayed in the City to enjoy the evening’s fireworks over the Matanzas Bay.
“It was a great July 4th celebration,” Thate said.
