Vicky Oakes appointed Supervisor of Elections

Governor Rick Scott announced to Historic City News today that he has appointed Victoria C. “Vicky” Oakes as the Supervisor of Elections for St. Johns County filling the vacancy created last month by the resignation of long-time Supervisor Penny Halyburton.

Her term is effective immediately and will run through January 7, 2013. Oakes told Historic City News that she intends to register as a candidate for her new office; her name will appear on next year’s ballot.

Oakes, 54, of St. Augustine, has served as the assistant supervisor of elections for the St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections Office since 1988. Previously, she was an assistant supervisor in the St. Johns County Tax Collectors Office from 1983 to 1988.

Halyburton told Historic City News that she is excited for her former assistant supervisor and she has pledged her endorsement and support when Oakes qualifies for the office next year.

We spoke to Oakes this evening after she received the call from the Governor’s office. She said that she is looking forward to continuing to serve St. Johns County voters in her new role.

For the moment, the supervisor’s office is busy with a special election; however, Oakes says that once the dust settles, she will celebrate the good news with other members of her staff. “We are all part of a team that Penny put together a long time ago and we are glad that we have this opportunity to continue to work with each other,” Oakes said.
