Historic City News was informed that Florida’s Weatherization Assistance Program, offered through St. Johns Housing Partnership, provides free repairs and updates to eligible, low-income homeowners in St. Johns and Clay counties.
As the summer temperatures rise, so do energy costs, but this local program can help homeowners keep their monthly energy bills low.
The program hires local contractors to service homes whose owners are within 200 percent of the poverty guideline. Some of the services provided are weather stripping, caulking and other energy efficiency updates. The focus is on energy conservation and saving low-income residents money on utility costs, with the help of local contractors.
One Hastings homeowner, Robert Verdell, had his attic insulated, ceiling caulked, doors sealed and windows tightened to keep cool air in his home. He also had his aging air conditioning system replaced and had 10 new solar window screens installed to help block the sun.
“With the new upgrades, this summer is 100 percent more bearable than last year,” said Verdell, who has suffered through sweltering indoor temperatures and high energy bills in previous summers.
Kawana Brinson, weatherization specialist employed by the St. Johns Housing Partnership appreciates the fact that the program helps homeowners and creates jobs in her area. Brinson was laid off from her job as an electrician two and a half years ago but was quickly hired by the St. Johns Housing Partnership.
“I feel good knowing that clients can sleep better knowing their home is more energy-efficient,” said Brinson.
Residents who are interested in the program should visit the St. Johns Housing Partnership and have their Social Security card, driver’s license, Proof of Ownership, current utility bill and proof of income with them to fill out their application and quickly find out if they are eligible.
“We are glad to help those eligible for the Weatherization Assistance Program in our community,” said Bill Lazar, Executive Director of the St. Johns Housing Partnership. “These funds will not last forever, so we encourage anyone who is eligible to contact our office and seek out these free services.”
