Historic City News has been notified by Public Information Officer Mark Samson that a local woman jumped from the center span of the Bridge of Lions yesterday evening during the peak of rush-hour traffic.
At about 5:00 p.m., the 47 year-old woman, who lives in the 100 block of Estrada Avenue, jumped into the Matanzas River — she did not sustain any severe injuries.
The woman, whose identity is not being released, was retrieved from the water by two City Marina employees; then taken to the marina where she was examined by paramedics.
According to Samson, she told her daughter she wanted to do harm to herself.
Officer Jeff Truncellito and Officer Greg Nichols took the white female into custody and transported her to Flagler Hospital; where she has been admitted for a mental health evaluation.
Samson told Historic City News that he checked the local police master name index and determined that “she had no prior run-ins” with the St. Augustine Police Department.
She will remain in involuntary custody at the hospital for up to 72 hours and be evaluated by mental health workers under the provisions of the Florida Mental Health Act.
