450th Commemoration Youth Ambassadors activities

This month, Historic City News has learned that student members of the St Augustine 450th Commemoration “Youth Ambassadors” will tour the St Augustine Lighthouse and learn about the vast maritime heritage history of the city.

Last month, the ambassadors had an enjoyable time learning about the art scene in St Augustine from Elise Brady at the St Augustine Art Association on Marine Street. Afterwards, the students walked over to the Ximenez-Fatio House at 28 Cadiz Street and learned about life in an 1830’s boarding house from Julie Gatlin.

A proclamation will be read at next month’s city commission meeting declaring June 11 as “Youth Ambassadors Day” in St Augustine. The recognition comes on the one-year anniversary of the Youth Ambassador Program. Following the commission meeting, the students will proceed to tour the Pena-Peck house and then stay for dinner in celebration of the milestone.

These monthly events acquaint the students with the people, places and history that make St Augustine unique, as they learn how to be effective volunteers for St Augustine 450th Commemoration activities.

On April 28th and 29th, the students helped with tours of the H.M.S. Bounty. The students were responsible for taking groups to and from the ship at the St. Augustine Municipal Marina.
