Commodore Daniel E. Floryan reported to Historic City News that on Palm Sunday, the St Augustine Yacht Club would present the annual “Blessing of the Fleet” offered by the Most Reverend Felipe J. Estevez, Bishop of the Diocese of St Augustine.
The ancient event relives a time when the Matanzas Bay was filled with fleets of commercial trawlers. The fishing boats were blessed as they went to sea; in the hopes of enjoying a bountiful shrimp season.
Today the tradition continues as those who fish, both commercially and for sport, seek blessings on their vessels for an abundant catch and all those who take to the waterways who seek safety upon the water and a safe return home.
The St Augustine Yacht Club has been part of our historic waterfront community since 1946. As part of their rich maritime heritage, they are inviting all vessels, both pleasure and commercial craft, to participate.
Bishop Estevez will offer the traditional blessing from the docks of the St. Augustine City Marina to all who pass before him on Palm Sunday, April 1st.
THE BLESSING
May the peace and blessing of the Almighty God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit descend upon these ships and upon all who shall be in them and remain forever.
