Archaeological resources a local priority

All public and private properties within the city limits of St Augustine have required evaluation by a trained and professional archaeologist since 1986; however, that effort was reinforced last night when city commissioners passed a resolution for the further protection of archaeological resources.

Commissioner Nancy Sikes-Kline said, “We can all be the best stewards of our property and be sure that when it’s excavated it is not done willfully but with professional oversight.”

The St Augustine City Commission voted unanimously for passage of Resolution No. 2012-02, which serves as a reminder that, as an owner of private property, you should recognize the archaeological significance of what is found by the excavation of land.

This includes contacting the city prior to any excavation and working with city staff for the overall protection and preservation of archaeological resources.
