Park Service Specialist Terri Newmans announced to Historic City News that Fort Mose Historic State Park would host an open house in the visitor center on May 25, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. as part of this year’s Art in the Park program.
The reception will be free and open to the public. The museum entry fee of $2.00 per person will still apply for those wishing to view the museum.
“Fifth grade students from Mill Creek Elementary School were encouraged to create original artwork interpreting the history of Fort Mose; the first legally sanctioned, free African settlement in what is now the United States,” said Fifth grade class leader Donna Locke.
The Art in the Park program is presented by Fort Mose Historic State Park in cooperation with the Fort Mose Historical Society as a way to promote the history of Fort Mose in local schools.
Newmans said that the artwork would remain on display in the park’s visitor center located at 15 Fort Mose Trail in St Augustine through September.
