Members of the St Augustine City Commission will hear from the public during their regular meeting Monday night regarding whether they feel the carpet golf course on the bayfront should be kept, the property repurposed, or if it should be replaced with green space.

The question arose at their last meeting, when commissioners learned of the need to remodel the facility in order to bring it into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act according to a report provided by the current operator of the city-owned landmark,

“The Commission now wants to discuss the future of the half-acre waterfront site and thus wants to hear from the community,” Director of Public Affairs Paul Williamson told reporters today. “Commissioners are always open to listening to constituents’ points of view on matters under consideration.”

A petition was posted at the miniature golf office seeking signatures from players who want to see the 65 year-old tradition continued at that site.

Ripley’s Believe Or Not! Museum currently leases and operates the facility in conjunction with ticketing operations for its sightseeing trains and has expressed its willingness to remodel, but needs an extended lease in order to recoup the $50,000 estimated cost.

In considering options, commissioners began discussing other possible uses for the space. For instance, removing the carpet golf would more than double the open space at the Municipal Marina often used for events such as the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival on this weekend.
