Elaine Fraser, owner of the Oldest Wooden School House Museum and Gardens in St Augustine, reported to Historic City News that next year’s celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s discovery of Florida would be immersed in history, authenticity, and character.
Fraser recently hosted a “Garb and Gear” event in the Gardens to let everyone experience the look and feel of items commonly worn and used in an authentic colonial Spanish Florida setting.
“Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this gathering a success,” Fraser told reporters. “It was so wonderful to see such a great turnout and so many people interested in getting involved in Florida’s 500th Anniversary.”
On Saturday, July 21, The Fountain of Youth Archeological Park will hold the “School of 1513” featuring a comprehensive itinerary of topics; invaluable to re-enactors and others who will play parts in the interpretation of 16th century life in America’s oldest city.
“The School of 1513 participants will enjoy the entire day of hands on training and education,” Fraser said. “After learning about authentic clothing, armor, weapons and navigation, participants will receive a certificate of completion.”
