Hit-and-run crash closes Old Moultrie Road

An early-morning collision in St Augustine sent the victim of a hit-and-run to Flagler Hospital with what are described as “life threatening” injuries, according to information received by Historic City News from sheriff’s spokesman Sargent Charles E. Mulligan.

Just before 7:00 a.m., traffic homicide investigators from the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene of the crash that occurred along Old Moultrie Road; between South Dixie Highway and to rear entrance to the Seabridge Shopping Center.

According to a preliminary report filed by Deputy Sheriff J.D. “Mac” McGinnis, a 30 year-old black man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of his family, was operating a motor scooter — driving southbound on Old Moultrie Road

In reconstructing the collision, investigators believe that the man was rear-ended by a yet unknown vehicle. Evidence collected at the scene may tie the perpetrator to this crime; so, Mulligan is asking Historic City News readers to come forward with any information they may have that would be helpful in identifying a suspect.

While investigators were on the scene, Old Moultrie Road was closed, causing delays in local traffic using that highway.

At this time, the victim’s condition is not known. Officials are not saying whether alcohol or heavy fog in parts of the county this morning played a role in the crash.
