Two jailed after man stabbed at transient camp

A 43 year-old transient was taken to Flagler Hospital last night with non-life threatening injuries after he was stabbed by two other men in a fight over a woman that lived at a transient camp in the woods off SR-207.

Sheriff’s dispatchers received an E-911 call reporting the stabbing at 11:54 p.m. last night; according to a communications supervisor contacted by Historic City News this morning.

Deputies responded to the scene and spoke with 46 year-old Elizabeth C. Dynes who said that she witnessed the assailants come into the camp and begin yelling for the victim to come out of his tent.

When the victim came out, the altercation ensued and the victim was stabbed. The two attackers fled the encampment before law enforcement officers arrived.

Based on information gathered in their investigation, detectives were able to identify and locate 35 year-old Robert Tony Hicks who resides at 1920 Lightsey Road in St Augustine and 39 year-old Peter Joseph Grattan at Grattan’s residence at 950 Sidney Street in St Augustine — the men who detectives say committed the attack.

After the assailants were located, and during efforts to take Hicks into custody, he struck a Sheriff’s Office canine in the head; then was secured by deputies without further incident.

Detectives charged Hicks with aggravated battery, resisting an officer without violence, and striking a police service animal. Grattan is charged with principal to aggravated battery, and resisting an officer without violence.

The pair was booked into the St Johns County Detention Facility around 3:00 a.m. this morning. Hicks is being held in lieu of bonds totaling $53,000 and Grattan is being held in lieu of bonds totaling $26,500.
