Local attorney, Patrick Canan, announced to Historic City News that he will run for St Johns County School Board District 5; which includes parts of St Augustine Beach, the City of St Augustine, Vilano Beach and the World Golf Village.
Canan and his wife, Dawn, have three children — all enrolled in St. Johns County Schools.
During the 2009/2010 school year, he was a member of the Core Planning Team tasked with the development of strategic initiatives and educational goals for the next decade.
“I can think of nothing more important than having a thriving educational system in our County. I am committed to doing everything I can to make that happen,” Canan said. “I believe my legal experience, knowledge of the educational system through my children and involvement in the strategic planning committee uniquely position me.”
The seat is currently held by Carla Wright, who has announced that she will not seek re-election.
Canan has been a resident of St Johns County since 1990. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1978 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and completed law school at the University of Florida in 1981.
He is a former St Johns County Assistant State Attorney and Division Chief and has been in private practice since 1994.
Canan is a member of the Rotary Club of St Augustine and currently on the Board of Directors of the United Way, EPIC Community Services, St Francis House and the St Johns County Education Foundation.
