Historic City News has been notified that one victim has survived in last night’s boating accident that occurred when two passengers were thrown from a motor boat in Salt Run; just north the Conch House Marina Resort in St Augustine.
The drama began at approximately 7:00 p.m., when witnesses reported seeing two people thrown from a motor boat while they were attempting to make a sharp turn in Salt Run.
Both men were reported to be treading water for a time before one victim attempted to swim to retrieve the boat. When he was unable to reach it, he swam to a small island in Salt Run.
The swimmer was picked up by a passing vessel and taken to shore, according to St Johns County Rescue spokesman, Lieutenant Bob Snell. He was uninjured and did not require medical attention.
Marine rescue watercraft and aircraft from St Johns County Fire Rescue, City of St Augustine Fire Department and the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office continued to search for the second victim; who was last seen treading water in the northern end of Salt Run near the St Augustine Inlet.
Rescue crews spotted a wallet floating on the surface of the water and commenced shallow dives in that area until nightfall.
At approximately 10:15 p.m. last night, Historic City News learned that rescuers from St Johns County Marine Rescue and the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office recovered the body of the second victim.
Identification is pending notification of the victim’s family.
