Historic City News reporters learned that the pilot and at least one other occupant of a local aircraft that left Northeast Florida Regional Airport Tuesday, has crashed during the second leg of a charter flight yesterday morning as it was preparing to land at Gary Indiana Jet Center.
The single-engine plane, a Cirrus SR 22, belonged to Gandy Air LLC in St Augustine.
National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Authority investigators returned to the scene this morning in an effort to determine what caused the plane to simply “fall from the sky” as described by one witness on the ground yesterday.
The four-seat aircraft flew from St Augustine to Smyrna, TN Tuesday evening — and then left early yesterday morning before crashing into a wooded area east of West Gary Lighthouse Charter School about two hours later.
Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey should be able to release the names of victims in the crash soon; although Gary Indiana Fire Chief, Teresa Everett, reported that Frey would have to confirm that human remains from only two victims were recovered by HAZMAT team members at the crash scene.
