Historic City News in St Augustine was notified by the Florida Highway Patrol just after noon today that two St Johns teens were transported to Shands Hospital Jacksonville with serious injuries, after the car they were driving collided with a St Johns County school bus.
The 17-year-old driver, Jeremy K. Fairbanks, and his 15-year-old brother, Steven A. Fairbanks, were heading northbound on SR-13 in a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe. A school bus, stopped at the intersection of Cunningham Estates Road, pulled out onto SR-13 in front of them.
The Fairbanks brothers, who reside on Bay Hollow Court, were both wearing their seatbelts according to the crash report. When the driver applied brakes, the Tahoe skidded and the front collided with the left side of 2008 school bus; causing about $3000 worth of damage to the bus.
The left rear tires of bus rolled over the hood of the teen’s Tahoe in the crash, causing about $7000 in damage, investigators estimated.
Emergency medical personnel stabilized the brothers for transport to the trauma unit based on the severity of their injuries.
The bus driver, 62 year-old Robert J. Irons who lives on Nottingham Forrest in Jacksonville, was charged with violation of right of way.
