Raphael Cosme reported to Historic City News today from the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run in St Augustine; dozens of participants banded together to show their support for Special Olympics Programs around the world.
Founded in 1981, the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is the movement’s largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle.
Special Olympians carrying the symbolic torch joined about 60 – 80 runners at 4:00 p.m. today at the parking lot of the St Johns County from the Sheriff’s Office. The runners followed a course heading south along US-1, turning onto San Marco Avenue, then continuing to the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument.
The law enforcement support organization was able to raise over $38 million for Special Olympics last year. Deputy Rafael Fuentes coordinated the event again this year.
