Yesterday, the first day of early voting for the November 6 General Election, set a new record for St Johns County elections; according to a report from Supervisor Vicky Oakes received by Historic City News after the polls closed at 7:00 p.m.
During the November 4, 2008 General Election, 5,693 voted early on Friday October 31, 2008, a record that held for voter turnout until today.
“A special thanks to all the poll workers who each had busy days,” Oakes said. “They just keep giving tirelessly.”
According to Oakes, 7,780 voters in total came to the polls to cast early ballots.
“Vote by mail is a growing success this year as we find new, more convenient methods to accommodate the needs of St Johns County voters,” Oakes told Historic City News reporters.
Of 25,498 ballots mailed or picked up at the Elections Office, nearly half, 12,646 ballots, have been returned and will be forwarded to the canvasing board this week.
