Seeking out isolated bits of information, Anna Von Mertens interests are far-reaching, from discovering the way the night sky was seen above historic or violent moments in our collective past, or how currents surrounding magnetic poles behave, to interpreting auras within iconic art historical paintings, and tracking “how energy is dispersed in a nuclear explosion.” She spends hours meticulously translating this empirical data into paintings, hand-dying and hand-stitching fabric as a means to examine and map universal topics that might also shed light on the personal.
