The identity of the security guard injured in the Memorial Day weekend incident involving Jacksonville Jaguars player Maurice Jones-Drew has been released by his Ponte Vedra Beach attorney, Gregory A. Anderson, in a prepared statement regarding his client.
According to published reports, Conch House security video captures Jones-Drew rapidly approaching 31-year-old Kasim Antwan Howard from the back-left side and, according to Anderson, “sucker punching” Howard in the jaw. The athlete has not been charged with any crime. We have contacted State Attorney R. J. Larizza to request notification as soon as a decision is reached.
According to records of the Division of Licensing, regulators of private security officers in Florida, Howard, who resides at 46 Nesmith Avenue in St Augustine, was issued a security guard license in 2007, D-2700358, however, as of today, Howard’s security guard status indicates “licensure subject to review”.
At the time of this incident, Howard could have only provided unarmed security services under the direct employment of the Conch House bar and restaurant — unless his security officer license was in good standing at that time.
As a result of this attack, Howard’s attorney says his client suffered a dislocated jaw as well as spinal injuries. “He was hospitalized, later released, and is recovering at home,” Anderson wrote in the e-mail.
“We are evaluating the remedies available to Mr. Howard, who conducted himself professionally,” his attorney said. “Mr. Jones-Drew’s conduct was deplorable and certainly unbecoming a professional athlete. Those attempting to sanitize this incident are either uninformed or motivated by reasons other than justice.”
