Media Relations Officer Kevin Kelshaw informed local Historic City News reporters this afternoon that two Bartram Trail High School students, confirmed by deputies to have been involved in racing another vehicle, have been involved in a high-speed crash; both teens were injured — one critically.
The passenger, 16-year-old Aubrey Thompson, St Johns, was transported to UF Health Jacksonville by air ambulance with life threatening injuries. The driver, 16-year-old Dylan Christopher Shaw, of St Johns, was transported to Baptist South Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“The single-vehicle collision occurred about 11:30 this morning on Longleaf Pine Parkway near Orange Branch Trail,” Kelshaw told local reporters. “Both occupants of the 2000 Toyota pickup truck were stabilized at the scene by St Johns Fire Rescue and transported to area hospitals.”
The preliminary investigation revealed that speed was a factor in the crash and injuries were intensified for one of the victims because he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt.
Charges are pending further investigation by Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Traffic Homicide Unit.
