Historic City News has learned that a small army of citizens, numbering about 40 in total, launched a failed attempt to take possession of the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument yesterday; however, the invasion was short-lived and the 17th century fortress remains in the possession of the United States Department of the Interior.
According to National Park Service Chief Kim Mayo, the revolutionaries, a group of visiting juveniles whose names were not released, surmounted the gate; closed by order of the federal government shutdown, begun last week. All Park Service websites have been taken offline as well with a message, “Because of the federal government shutdown, all national parks are closed and National Park Service webpages are not operating.”
As a show of mercy in battle, the underage insurrectionists were rounded up by park rangers and issued trespass warnings in lieu of being taken to jail — or being shackled and imprisoned like Native Americans in 1875 after they were captured in the American west.
