City tries to sell expansion of horse stables

Historic City News readers have been invited to participate during a Lunch-‘n-Learn session in order to learn more about the city’s plans to relocate its horse stables; as presented to the City Commission at its February 25 meeting.

Currently the stables are located at the southern end of Riberia Street; however, the plan calls for the stables to be relocated to the open area east of Eddie Vickers Park.

“This is an opportunity to meet with city staff, ask questions, and review the plans for the new facility,” St Augustine’s director of public affairs, Paul Williamson, told reporters. “The city will provide soft drinks and participants are invited to bring lunch, if desired.”

Lunch-‘n-Learn about the horse stables is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, at the Willie Galimore Center located at 399 Riberia Street in St Augustine.

The new facility will increase the stable size from its current 4,000-square-feet to 8,600-square-feet, but will not infringe on the area currently used by the Lincolnville Farmer’s Market each Sunday, Williamson told Historic City News.

Total cost for the paddock construction is between $70,000 to $100,000 according to Assistant City Manager Tim Burchfield. The plans include five grassed paddocks, something the current facility does not provide.
