St Augustine’s annual summer-long music series begins Monday and Historic City News readers are invited to attend the free Memorial Day afternoon performance at the Gazebo in the Plaza de la Constitucion.
During the remainder of the summer, concerts are held on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m., concluding with another afternoon performance on Labor Day. Attendees should bring lounge chairs for seating. Picnic dinners are popular, but alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the Plaza.
“The series is known for showcasing the best in regional musical talent; including bluegrass and blues, jazz and country, swing and folk, old time and popular rock — Concerts in the Plaza has something for everyone,” Paul Williamson told Historic City News reporters. “The series has been called the best way to spend a Thursday night in St Augustine and it’s easy to understand why; when you are enjoying quality musical entertainment, sitting under the majestic oaks of the Plaza — a gathering place for residents and visitors for well over four centuries.”
Performances may be postponed, but cancelled only if the weather prohibits the performance from continuing. Florida’s summer rain showers are usually brief, even when heavy. “It is rare for a performance to be cancelled in advance,” Williamson added. “If we know in advance that a concert is cancelled, we will make every effort to notify the public through Historic City News and other local media.”
