County teachers win minimum $2,000 pay raise

Yesterday evening, the Executive Office of Governor Rick Scott announced to Historic City News that the House and Senate’s agreement to implement $480 million in teacher pay raises has been passed.

St Johns County school teachers will earn a minimum $2,000 pay raise, and language in the funding provides that each of Florida’s 67 school districts, plus lab and charter schools, have the flexibility to develop their own performance plans.

“The object was to award the greatest number of teachers the largest teacher pay raise possible,” the governor told Historic City News local reporters. “Depending on the plan developed, the districts have the ability to provide teacher raises of $2,500, or even $3,500.”

Governor Scott thanked the House and the Senate for ensuring that we build on our commitment to implement performance pay for teachers.

“Thanks to Governor Scott for his efforts to provide an immediate across-the-board pay increase to Florida’s classroom teachers,” Florida Education Association President, Andy Ford, said. “The demonstrated performance of our teachers has brought Florida’s education system to sixth in the nation.”

Scott echoed Ford’s comments, saying, “Our teachers are some of the best in the nation and they deserve to be rewarded for their great work.”
