The SR-206 Crescent Beach Bridge will be totally closed to traffic this weekend from 7:30 p.m. Friday to 5:30 a.m. Monday morning as part of the bridge rehabilitation project, a Florida Department of Transportation spokesman told local Historic City News reporters.
This closure will be followed by two more weekend closures scheduled for May 10-13 and May 17- 20. The bridge will not be closed Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27).
These total bridge closures are necessary for steel and machinery work at the center span of the bridge. During the closures, motorists may use the SR-312 bridge as an alternate route. The closures are subject to change depending on bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
The bridge will remain open to boaters and at least one leaf of the bridge will be able to open to allow boats to pass. If both leaves need to be open for passage, a four hour notice must be provided. A boater can provide four-hours notice by contacting the bridge tender on VHF radio.
This Florida Department of Transportation project includes rehabilitating and replacing electrical and mechanical portions of the drawbridge to maintain reliability of the bridge and prevent future breakdowns and delays.
Quinn Construction, Inc., of Palmetto is under contract to complete the work at a cost of $3.3 million by the end of 2013.
