Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Dylan Bryan updated Historic City News this evening on the fatal Interstate crash that occurred this morning; leaving northbound Christmas Eve traffic, headed into St Johns County, detoured onto US-1 and backlogged for miles.
A driver for Florida Rock and Tank Lines, Inc., 41-year-old Christopher James Mceuen, who lived at 10960 Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville, died at the scene of the blazing crash that followed after he rear-ended an 18-wheel tractor-trailer rig and then flipped his fully fueled gasoline delivery truck onto its side. The tanker exploded into flames and Mceuen was trapped inside the cab.
The driver of the 2006 Peterbuilt, 33-year-old St Clair Agenord, who lives at 4091 Vista del Largo in Winter Haven, was not injured in the crash. Witnesses say that Agenord’s commercial trailer was struck by Mceuen, from behind near mile marker 290.
Flagler County Sheriff’s Commander, Bob Weber, told Historic City News that Agenord was arrested and booked at the Flagler County jail on an outstanding warrant from another county. He is being held in lieu of $2,000 bond.
The original Christmas Eve 9-1-1 calls reporting the crash were received at 3:45 a.m. By mid-morning, the crash site has been cleared of the vehicles involved; however, due to the extensive heat from the crash, the roadway was severely damaged and requires emergency repairs. Work crews remained on the scene to begin repaving the damaged roadway.
The roadway reopened around 5:30 p.m. this evening.
