Historic City News reporters were notified by FHP Sergeant Dennis E Smith that during the wee hours this morning, a St Johns County deputy sustained minor injuries when another driver slid her vehicle into the backend of his parked patrol car while he was stopped on the shoulder of SR-13, south of Greenbriar Road.
The deputy, 48-year-old Glenn Lappe of St Augustine, was parked off the roadway; southbound on the west side of SR-13; when a 2002 Toyota Camry, driven by 24-year-old Priscilla Gipson of Middleburg, applied brakes and slid into the back of the stopped patrol car.
The investigation revealed that Deputy Lappe was not wearing his seatbelt. Both drivers suffered minor injuries and each was transported to Memorial Hospital on Race Track Road, received treatment and were released. Alcohol was ruled out as a contributing factor in the crash, according to Sergeant Smith.
The marked patrol vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet Impala, suffered about $5,000 in damage. Gipson’s vehicle suffered about $4,000 in damages. Both vehicles were towed from the crash scene, according to the incident report.
Gipson was charged with Careless Driving.
