Driver dies at the scene of crash with dump truck

Posted on 11/20/201311/20/2013 By Historic City News

400-US1-RACETRACK-SIG-4Troop G Sergeant Dylan Bryan reported to Historic City News that the Florida Highway Patrol has cleared US-1 southbound at Racetrack Road following an early morning two-vehicle crash that left the driver of one vehicle dead on the scene.

According to Bryan, speed is likely a factor in the crash that occurred this morning at about 2:45 a.m. when a black Dodge Magnum, traveling south on US-1, crashed into the rear end of a commercial dump truck.

“The Dodge Magnum caught fire as a result of the impact and the driver became trapped inside,” Bryan told local news reporters. “After the impact, the dump truck driver attempted to pull over at the safest possible place; but, then started to experience mechanical issues due to the impact.”

Northbound lanes of Philips Highway reopened around 6:45 a.m. Southbound lanes were reopened at about 8:30 a.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
