Manuel Minero Gonzalez, head of communications for Fundacion Nao Victoria, informed Historic City News that they were saying “goodbye” to the port of St Augustine this morning; winding up a successful visit for the owners of the educational ship, El Galeon Andalucia.
The replica of a 16th Century Spanish galleon has been a guest of the City of St Augustine at the Municipal Marina since May 21 — a stay that was extended three times.
“If everything goes as planned, St Augustine will serve as the North American home port of El Galéon and possibly other ships of Fundacion Nao Victoria,” Dana Ste. Claire, director of the St Augustine 450th Commemoration told reporters.
The great sailing vessel has concluded its commemoration voyage for the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s naming of La Florida, and is headed for an engagement in New York City. From there, El Galéon sets sail for San Juan Puerto Rico and a waiting film project.
By the end of this year, or early 2014, city officials are hopeful that El Galeon Andalucia will officially be a “semi-permanent” resident, and can return to entertain and educate St Augustine’s residents and visitors.
