Environmental groups hold annual climate change event

Summer Herd informed Historic City News that local citizens will be joining hands on Saturday, May 18th, at the St Augustine Beach Pier to stand in solidarity against offshore drilling, in Florida and throughout the world, as part of an annual global event — “Hands across the Sand”.

This event also focuses on promoting clean energy solutions as well as the protection of coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife and fisheries.

“Essentially, through events like Hands across the Sand, we are getting closer to achieving our goal of fossil fuel independence,” said Herd, who is director of an environmental group hosting the event in St Augustine. ”All groups involved hope to use this event to highlight the realities of climate change as well as focus on key groups that champion sustainable solutions.”

Group volunteers and event attendees are asked to gather at the south side of the St Augustine Beach Pier at 11:00 a.m. in preparation for the event, which starts at noon.

Earth’s Lifeline Global Warriors, Environmental Youth Council, Oceana, Gulf Restoration Network, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Sierra Club, and Surfrider Foundation are cosponsoring the Hands across the Sand initiative; formed to engage communities in standing together against the expansion of offshore oil drilling.

“Through our amazing network of driven groups, we are working from the bottom up to solve the world’s greatest global challenge of climate change,” Herd added.
