Facing Discrimination in St Augustine

The Friends of the Library informed Historic City News that that they will host a presentation by Dr Dorothy Israel, Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University, entitled “Facing Discrimination in St Augustine”.

Throughout her professional life she has traveled extensively for government and private organizations in Africa, South America, the Caribbean and Europe recruiting professionals to study at Stony Brook University, School of Social Welfare where she headed the Human Growth and Development Sequence. She also worked in countries to assist in the provision mental health services to meet the needs of populations served.

“Writing has been a hobby during my retirement years,” Israel told reporters. “It has given me the opportunity to express the joys of growing up during the Harlem Renaissance, and the pains of being an African American woman.”

Educated at New York University where she later taught, she received her Masters Degree in Social work at Clark-Atlanta University, and a doctorate in Counseling Psychology at Union Institute and University.

Since coming to St Augustine in 1994, Israel has become active in local civic organizations including the Excelsior Museum and Cultural Center as a creative designer, Secretary, Fort Mose Historical Society; Chair, Mentoring program, The Venetian Club of St. Augustine, Inc; member of American Association of University Women, St. Augustine Chapter. She is a member of St. Cyprians Episcopal Church.
