Christina Langston, Director of Community Relations for the St Johns County School District, reported to Historic City News that fifty individuals, born around the world in 48 different countries, will assemble next week to recite the “Pledge of Allegiance” — their final step in becoming United States citizens.
The group of naturalization applicants, including some active duty service members, will be joined by 150 proud fifth graders at Cunningham Creek Elementary School who will witness and participate in this historic ceremony.
“In addition to providing a unique educational experience for our students, the feedback from the community, and the new immigrant citizens, has been so positive that it has become a tradition at the school,” Langston told local news reporters.
Four years ago was the first time a school in Northeast Florida had ever hosted such an event. But, necessity being the mother of invention, when the logistics of visiting a courthouse to witness a naturalization ceremony became too difficult, the Department of Homeland Security agreed to bring this opportunity to the auditorium of Cunningham Creek Elementary.
The ceremony for the applicants and their families will be held on Wednesday, November 6th at 9:00 a.m.; when the words “with liberty and justice for all” will resonate in the student auditorium; and when, together, the students and applicants pledge their honor to our great nation.
