Tom Iacuzio reported to Historic City News that Flagler College honored Florida Senator John E. Thrasher yesterday with a Distinguished Visitor Award; bestowed upon him by Flagler College President William T. Abare, Jr.
Abare presented Senator Thrasher with the award on behalf of the Board of Trustees of the College during the ceremonies held in the newly remodeled Solarium. College Chancellor and former member of the Florida House of Representatives, William Proctor, was also on hand.
The decision to recognize Thrasher with the award, Abare said, was made based on the senator’s significant contributions to the State of Florida, St Johns County, City of St Augustine and Flagler College — particularly in the areas of education and historic preservation.
The Board of County Commissioners approved a proclamation at their Tuesday morning meeting declaring yesterday, “Senator John Thrasher Day” in St Johns County. Vice Commission Chairman, Rachael Bennett, presented the proclamation to Thrasher at the celebration last night.
Thrasher was also presented with a letter of appreciation by the City of St. Augustine.
Senator Thrasher’s political career also includes time served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1992-2000 and as Speaker of the House from 1998 to 2000. He was elected to the State Senate in 2009, re-elected subsequently, and serves as Chair of the Rules Committee.
