According to Historic City News sources, the first week of “Hands on History Camp” at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument was a success for student campers enrolled in the educational and fun program going on this summer.
Future sessions are scheduled for July 8 -12 and, the final week, August 5 – 9.
“Thank you to everyone who helped make the first week of our Hands on History Camp a success. We really couldn’t do it without your help,” said Park Guide, Jesse Olbrich. “Weeks two and three are fast approaching so I hope to see us working together once again to make them just as big of a success as the first week.”
The camp features different hands-on activities; including masonry, making tee-shirts and taking part in Native American crafts.
In addition to the various interactive portions of the camp, participants learn about the basic history of the National Park Service, soldiers’ lives at the fort, and the evolution of artillery.
All three weeks are “full up” for campers, Olbrich told reporters. But, he said, we will need additional volunteer assistance inside the fort on the dates of the camp. For any questions or to help us out please contact Ranger Amy Mest at Amelia_mest@nps.gov
