Local event part of nationwide March against Monsanto

Kristin Chambers and Eugenia Merkoulov informed Historic City News that a community awareness event will take place this Saturday, May 25th as part of a global effort to bring attention to what they call “questionable methods” used by Monsanto.

Most notably they cite dangers surrounding genetically modified organisms and their impact on human health and the environment.

“Consumer awareness rights, the rights of small farmers, and the right of future generations’ access to organic foods are just a handful of the issues covered by this series of events,” Chambers told reporters.

According to Merkoulov, there are a group of sponsors for the Saturday event; including Bill Hamilton and Southern Horticulture, Pop’n’Off Popcorn, The Fish Tank Recordings, Roaring Sound Productions, The St. Augustine Co-Op Initiative, The PC Pitstop, the Environmental Youth Council, Earthbeat Project, and Chambers’ group; LoveLight Movement.

If you plan to march and participate, meet at the Sculpture Gardens on A1A and 11th Street, near the St. Augustine Beach Police Department, at 10:00 a.m.

“The procession toward downtown will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will pause at the park on the east side of the Bridge of Lions around 11:30 a.m.,” Chambers wrote in an announcement received by Historic City News. “Those who would like to join at this point are welcome to do so.”

The march will resume toward downtown at noon; marching through the area and ending at the Plaza de la Consticucion. Speakers will begin at 1:00 p.m. with informative material available to those interested.

Merkoulov said that St Augustine is just one of over 250 cities, in 36 countries, on six continents, that will be hosting simultaneous “March against Monsanto” events on Saturday.
