Man charged with assaulting two others in Plaza

Monday evening at about 5:00 p.m., St Augustine Police Officer Bryan Johnson and Sergeant Richard Warner responded to a fight call from the Plaza de la Constitution. According to the report, one of the men involved was armed with a knife.

Warner was the first officer to arrive. He identified and secured 30-year-old Anthony Wellcome Roman Kennedy at the scene. Before placing Kennedy in his patrol vehicle, Warner patted Kennedy down, finding Kennedy to be in possession of a blue PHC box cutter with a razor blade.

Sergeant Warner detained Kennedy in the rear compartment of his patrol vehicle. In the course of his detention, Warner reported that Kennedy suffered a self-inflicted contusion injury to his forehead after he banged his head on the Plexiglas partition that separates the front and read compartments of the vehicle.

According to each of the two complainants, Kennedy, who resides at 499 Avilla Avenue in St Augustine, came up to them with a blue box cutter and threatened to cut them with it.

The first victim, a 41-year-old homeless man, stated that, in fear for his life, he began to run from Kennedy; but, his would-be assailant chased after him.

The second victim, a 55-year-old man who resides on Bridge Street, and is confined to a wheelchair, states that Kennedy came toward him and threatened him with the box cutter, as well.

After receiving treatment for his injury, Kennedy was released from the hospital and immediately taken into police custody. He was transported to the St Johns County Jail without further incident.

Kennedy was charged with two-counts of aggravated assault, each charge is a third-degree felony. He remains in custody this morning in lieu of $20,000 bail.
