St Augustine resident Logan Guidry announced to local Historic City News reporters that before the Fourth of July fireworks display reminds citizens of our independence, there will be a rally in the Plaza in protest of recently uncovered invasive data collection activities undertaken by the National Security Agency.
The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States says, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”
“If you will stand up for the principles of the Constitution of the United States, no matter the consequences, then be in the Plaza de la Constitution on July 4th at 4:00 P.M.,” Guidry told Historic City News reporters. “United States citizens have become fed up with the NSA, and other government agencies, that have violated the Fourth Amendment through programs such as PRISM; recently exposed by whistleblower Edward Snowden.”
Guidry says that St Augustine residents on Independence Day can pay homage to their Spanish ancestors who refused to remove their monument to the Constitution of the first Spanish Republic when asked by the Spanish Crown. Their defiance has left St Augustine’s Constitution Monument, for which the Plaza is named, as the only known surviving monument to the people’s constitution.
“The principles embodied by the obelisk only work when the people that hold them true refuse to back down,” Guidry cautioned.
A nationwide protest against these actions known as “Restore the 4th” will be taking place in hundreds of cities across the country on July 4th.
St Augustine will host one among many of these protests.
The St Augustine Restore the Fourth rally will be held at 4:00 P.M. in the Plaza de la Constitution surrounding the Constitution Monument in solidarity with others in cities across the United States.
