Some Historic City News readers may not know what a “flash mob” is, but if you had ever seen one, there is no doubt you would remember it — and, on Tuesday, April 2, at 5:30 p.m., you can get your chance when Betty Griffin House will make the Plaza de la Constitution in St Augustine the next target.
This fun event is being organized to show support for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, according to its coordinator, Kim Brumfield.
“Since the element of surprise is what makes a flash mob so exciting, I can’t give away too many details in public,” Brumfield told reporters. “If you are interested in participating, as a dancer or in the crowd, contact me at 904-808-9984.”
A flash mob is a spontaneous public performance, usually a dance, that appears seemingly out of nowhere with just one person, grows to hundreds of people, and then, quickly disappears as if nothing had happened.
On April Fool’s Day three years ago, Flagler College students and staff staged a flash mob on the lawn in front of the Proctor Library on Sevilla Street. Watch this video, filmed from the roof of the library, and you’ll see how this ordinary lunch break was transformed into a flash mob.
Brumfield encourages men and women of all ages to consider volunteering for this quirky and entertaining sight-gag, saying not to worry if you have never done anything like this. Responders will be given a link to an instructional video with the music and dance that she says will prepare you to participate.
There will be a practice on Monday April 1, 2013, 5:30 p.m. in the Plaza.
