St Johns County Fire Rescue reported to Historic City News that a total of 72 patients were treated at the Gentlemen of the Road tour Friday by county personnel and other medical personnel on the scene.
Of the 72, only 10 patients were transported to Flagler Hospital — all were in stable condition. The majority of patients were treated for dehydration or heat related injuries. Please keep that in mind as you prepare for today’s events and make sure you hydrate appropriately both before and during the event.
Public Affairs Director Paul Williamson reported that only one person was escorted off the property by law enforcement and no arrests were made Friday.
Heat Related Safety Tips from the St Johns County Health Department:
Signs of dehydration include thirst, weakness, nausea, muscle cramps, feeling dizzy and light headed, decreased urine levels or urine that has a strong odor or is darker than normal, tiredness, sluggishness, irritability and headaches.
All, some, or none of these signs may be present, so the best way to avoid dehydration is to monitor water or fluid intake, and modify activity or reduce the length of activity according to weather conditions.
To avoid becoming dehydrated, it is important to drink plenty of fluids, especially water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. This is particularly true on days when temperatures reach 90°F and higher. Depending upon your physical activity and heat exposure during hot weather, it’s a good idea to drink more water.
