Police spokesman Mark Samson cautions Historic City News readers that events associated with the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Ponce de Leon landing in Florida scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, will necessitate interruptions in traffic in downtown St Augustine.
Avenida Menendez between the Bridge of Lions and Cuna Street will be closed to all traffic between 8:30am and 10:00am, and Cathedral Place between Avenida Menendez and Cordova Street will be closed to all traffic between 8:30am and 12:30pm.
To accommodate traffic during these closures: from 8:30am-10:00am, traffic southbound on San Marco Avenue will turn west on W. Castillo Drive; King Street will be two-way from Cordova Street to Avenida Menendez; Bridge of Lions westbound traffic will continue west on two-way King Street; and traffic eastbound on King Street will continue east over Bridge of Lions.
Then, from 10:00am-12:30pm, all traffic returns to normal — except Cathedral Place; which will remain closed.
Additionally, because of related programming at Flagler College’s Lewis Auditorium at 12:30pm, traffic and parking on Granada Street will be restricted until after 1:00pm.
Traffic in the area should expect slowdowns, congestion or brief halts to allow for the procession. St Augustine Police will escort the procession and monitor key points to facilitate vehicular traffic and ensure the safety of the participants.
