St Johns County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance call at a residence off White Castle Road this afternoon; where a 64-year-old local man, wanted by police for grand theft, felony battery, and tampering with a witness, threatened family members who were trying to talk him into surrendering.
As law enforcement vehicles pulled up to the scene at approximately 12:30 p.m. today, the man, identified as Rodney Wayne Stevens, who lived at 385 Katnack Road in St Johns County, ran inside the residence, and threatened to arm himself with a gun.
Stevens became aggressive with relatives, who were also inside the residence, when he believed they were going to notify law enforcement of his whereabouts and the existence of the outstanding felony arrest warrants.
Deputies followed Stevens into the residence and confronted him in a rear bedroom.
“At that point, one of our deputies shot and killed him,” Public Information Officer, Commander Chuck Mulligan told reporters. “We believe Stevens was armed; but, we have not interviewed the deputies yet.”
There were no other injuries reported in the incident.
