Candidates filing for election in St Johns County set record

Supervisor of Elections Vicky Oakes reported to Historic City News this afternoon that at the close of Qualifying Week, today at 12:00 noon, a record had been set for the St Johns County Elections Office – 90 candidates qualified for the 2014 election cycle.

Historic City News editor Michael Gold was at the Elections Office this afternoon as Qualifying Week for the 2014 Primary and General Election of City, County and special taxing districts drew to a close.

“15 minutes left to qualify,” Oakes announced in the lobby of her office as the noon deadline drew near. She made another announcement at 7 minutes and one at 3 minutes. There were people milling around in the final minutes of the weeklong qualifying period that officially began at noon on Monday. Oakes made an effort to speak to everyone, giving everyone one last chance to get in the line and declare themselves a candidate.

When there were no takers, Oakes made the final, official announcement that Qualifying was closed. There were some late entries and several candidates qualified to change the seat for which they had originally announced. Some last minute activity included Cory Mara resigning from the crowded St Johns County Commission District 2 race, and instead, declaring himself an alternative to incumbent Jeanne J Moeller, who is seeking re-election to the Anastasia Mosquito Control District, Seat 2.

In the District 4 race, 59-year-old Merrill Paul Roland returned to run for St Johns County Commission, without political party affiliation. Roland was first in the race; having declared his candidacy as a Republican in June of last year. He withdrew December 20th to serve a 100-day jail sentence. Roland was convicted at jury trial of first-degree misdemeanor battery. After he was released from custody, he resumed his campaign. He did not qualify using the petition method, instead, he paid to the Supervisor of Elections a check for $2,648.84 in order to appear on the ballot.
